Michael Huckleberry returns to the shoreline for the instants that do not repeat: a storm breaking open, a low tide turning to glass, the first hard line of sun on the water. The work is built on patience, disciplined selection, and the refusal to release an image until its composition carries the feeling that stopped him in the first place.

03 / About the artist

Michael Huckleberry

My name is Michael Huckleberry and my friends call me Huck. Folly Beach has been part of my life for over 30 years now. I live in Columbia, South Carolina. After many years away from Folly, I came home to a changed world, and Folly Beach is a living sanctuary to me. It is my church, my salvation. It's where I find my humble, and Folly grounds me in this crazy world. Out there on Folly, with nothing but the curvature of the earth on the horizon, I truly feel my size in this world, and Folly gives me what I need to hold the balance of life on this side of hope and beauty. I cannot let her go. She is with me in my heart always, and when I see these photographs, I feel a deep pull of emotion — emotions of love, emotions of hope, emotions of life. It moves me. The sun coming up over that horizon is different each time, each day, each moment, and lost forever in the next. This passion project of mine is my way of holding on to what's disappearing in front of my eyes. The photographs in this collection are all made on Folly Beach and in the Atlantic that she battles daily. All are printed on metal to be as enduring as Folly Beach herself.
